USound GmbH designs, develops and markets highly integrated micro-loudspeakers based on a new piezoelectric MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) technology. USound, founded in 2014, is based in Graz, Austria, with offices in Vienna, Austria, San Francisco, USA, Shanghai, China and Shenzhen, China. USound has been growing fast from the start, with a current headcount of 63 people. USound’s revenue model is based on the high-volume sales of MEMS loudspeakers on a B2B basis to OEMs or other manufacturers of audio equipment. A second revenue model is based on selling consumer products with its first design, smart glasses, is under development.

Role in SONICOM

Within SONICOM, USound GmbH will be responsible for designing and realising electronics hardware platforms for relevant proof-of-concepts activities in WP4. In particular, USound GmbH have extensive expertise in designing, fabricating and characterising augmented reality and wearable audio devices, including multi-driver 3D sound headphones and wireless audio eyewear. The expertise will be put at service of the project for realising audio systems based on the project requirements:

• Design and simulate the system
• Generate bill of materials and realise hardware
• Characterise the system 

Team members

Andrea Rusconi Clerici has 20 years of experience in the MEMS industry being involved in technology R&D, product design, manufacturing engineering and operations, ranging from new technology IP development to mass production. He has experience in research (Fraunhofer Institute), large companies (STMicroelectronics, Maxim Integrated) and start-ups (Sensordynamics, USound). He co-founded USound with the mission of bringing MEMS based micro speakers to the market and now serves as Managing Director and CTO. He has filed more than 30 Patents.
