SONICOM’s 2024 Research Successes

Spring is in the air, and it’s giving us the opportunity to reflect upon SONICOM’s achievements from the past year.

After the extensive scientific dissemination and collaboration activities during 2023, including the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and our Research Sandpit in Glasgow, the focus of 2024 moved back to core research on immersive audio and spatial acoustics.

We have made great advances across all of our core research themes: Immersion, Interaction, Integration, Experience, and Beyond. Researchers across our consortium have produced publications that have advanced our general understanding of spatial hearing mechanisms, developed methods for the estimation of HRTFs using parametric pinna models, given new insights into the relationship between the distance of a speaker and their perceived personality traits, and much more.

Alongside all this, we launched the newest version of the Binaural Rendering Toolbox that integrates much of our work into a useable framework, defined evaluation scenarios for our developments, and launched our first Listener Acoustic Personalisation (LAP) Challenge.

And these are just a taste of what we achieved in 2024! Read our full update below in our Year in Review 2024.
